Cell/Mobile phones and internet access
If you bring along an unlocked phone- not restricted to one network- you will be able to buy a local sim card and credit that should last you the duration of a few weeks in Uganda for around $5US. If you want to make calls back to your home country it won‟t cost you much either. There are several large networks operating across East Africa so ask somewhat what the most popular network is to ensure you have the coverage you will need.
You can, alternatively use your own phone in Uganda and will find the if your phone can roam it will almost always- apart from in the most remote locations, pick up a signal. It will undoubtedly cost you quite a lot to do this and make sure you keep expensive phones safe and out of sight when in built up areas.
Internet access is available in most towns and cities though don‟t expect anything too fast. There is a power shortage issue across Uganda so you may find you are unable to access the internet at certain times apart from luxury hotels.
